TRUMP REJECTION OF DACA IS OUTRAGEOUS ATTACK ON YOUNG WORKING PEOPLE

The Texas AFL-CIO today blasted President Trump’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (“DREAMers”) program.

“Once again, our nation and state are engaged in hypocrisy and injustice, disrupting the lives of young working people who are building a better future for all of us,” Texas AFL-CIO President John Patrick said. “It is shameful DACA is ending and it is shameful the State of Texas was prominent in making it happen.”

“DACA recognized those who qualified under the program belong here. Without even putting up a fight to defend DACA in court, President Trump has joined Gov. Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton in placing contributors to our state’s prosperity in legal limbo. Deportation is not an answer for DACA participants and shouldn’t even be a question.”

“The Texas AFL-CIO has hired ‘DREAMers’ as student interns. They have been impressive, outspoken and professional, adding great value to our organization. We will not tolerate diminishing their opportunity and vision. We will continue to fight for a path to citizenship for DREAMers.”

“What America needs is comprehensive immigration reform,” Patrick said, “not a politicized decision aiming yet again at a former President’s legacy. If Congress fails to act, history will judge those who carried out this assault on decency harshly.”
