DAN ANDERSON
1925-2001
The Secretary-Treasurer of the Communications Workers of America Local 6143 for 32 years, Dan Anderson cultivated improved working conditions in thousands of jobs and earned the respect of union members and management alike.
In a 40-year career at Southwestern Bell, the Laufman native served in various roles as a union steward before winning election to the secretary-treasurer post in 1961. During his tenure, CWA members saw substantial gains in their pay, benefits and overall dignity.
Anderson was particularly active in the San Antonio community, with heavy involvement in civic organizations, charities, and Little League. He was a top officer in the now-defunct Texas State Industrial Union Council and was instrumental in that organization’s decision to donate its closing financial balance to the Texas AFL-CIO Scholarship program as an endowment.
Anderson was known nationally throughout CWA and was active in the international union’s conventions. He retired from Southwestern Bell in 1986, and continued his union activism until his death in November.
