HARRY HUBBARD JR.

1924-2007

Harry Hubbard has spent half a century as a driving force in Texas labor, mingling with assembly line workers and governors in a quest for dignity in the workplace.

Brother Hubbard began his union career as a member of the Hod Carriers Union in Freeport. Following a stint in the Navy, he became a member of OCAW Local 4-228 in Port Neches. He went on to hold several offices in that local, including President, and served as President of the Sabine Area Central Labor Council.

He later served as Legislative Director and Secretary-Treasurer of the Texas AFL-CIO before becoming the organization's President from 1973 to 1989. In that role, he accomplished significant political victories against ever-increasing odds.

Hubbard was awarded the Walter P. Reuther Distinguished Service Award by the United Auto Workers. His "retirement" included a position at the John Gray Institute.

Brother Hubbard’s entry into the Texas Labor Hall of Fame acknowledges a career as an aggressive champion of labor in good and bad times.
