IVIE M. HALBROOKS
1915-2005
No one ever worked harder for the labor union movement in East Texas than Ivie M. Halbrook, a friend of the common man, a yellow dog Democrat, and a committed voice for organized labor.
A native of Huntington, in 1958 Sister Halbrooks organized the first Carpenter’s Ladies Auxiliary in Lufkin, where her husband was a member of Carpenters Local 2242. In 1961, she was elected Women’s Activity Director for the Lufkin Central Labor Council, where she now is in her 28th year as VIP Director.
Over the decades, she has walked picket lines, fed strikers and their families, and fought for union products in East Texas stores. She has spent more than 10,000 hours in volunteer work for labor organizations.
Yet she still found ample time to work for the many community service organizations that benefit the injured, the ill, the homeless and downtrodden.
Labor salutes Sister Halbrooks and her devotion to the highest of principles and to selflessness.
