JAMES E. (JIM) WARD, SR.

1917-1976

Jim Ward’s union career began in Houston in 1944 when he helped organize Steelworkers Local 3316.

He was a founding member and later President of the Texas CIO Council.

Brother Ward was widely known for his successful organizing efforts. He served as an Organizer and Staff Representative for the Steelworkers during the difficult years of Operation Dixie in the 1950s.

When Brother Ward became District Director of Region 37 of the Steelworkers in 1961, he developed political and educational programs that became national models.

He was a close friend and personal advisor to President Lyndon B. Johnson. He was co-chair of the Humphrey for President campaign, which carried Texas.

Jim Ward’s death in 1976 at age 59 was a stunning blow to the cause of unionism in Texas.
