ROBERT S. SHAKE
1938-2004
A key leader in the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for more than 40 years, Robert S. Shake dedicated himself to improving the lives of working families through his union, the Texas labor movement and the Democratic Party.
Shake was initiated into IBEW in 1962 after completing a four-year apprenticeship program. He held a succession of positions of increasing responsibility, organizing, managing business and overseeing apprenticeships within IBEW. As president of the Coastal Bend Labor Council, he was known as a “Yellow Dog,” Democrat who worked tirelessly for progressive candidates. He built a reputation throughout the state as an effective supporter of labor’s endorsed candidates.
A strong believer in labor’s involvement in community service, Shake served enthusiastically on the local Workforce Board and committed the Central Labor Council to a variety of United Way programs.
Among his accomplishments: helping formulate the IBEW’s local union retirement plan and a role in establishing the Regional Electrical Licensing Board in the Lower Rio Grande Valley.
An army veteran, Brother Shake attended Texas A&M University. He was survived by his wife, Linda Marie, and two sons and a daughter.
