ARLINGTON, Texas – Today, hundreds of Texans gathered at the University of Texas at Arlington in nearly 100 degree heat to fight back against Gov. Greg Abbott and President Donald Trump’s plan to rig our maps and lock in their political power.

LIVESTREAM: Arlington Fight the Trump Takeover Rally

“This isn’t a Republican or a Democratic issue — we can’t let them divide us like that,” said Tevita ‘Uhatafe, president of the Tarrant County Central Labor Council. “This redistricting scheme should matter to all workers, and that’s why the North Texas labor movement is here today. When our rights are under attack, we will always stand up and fight back!”

In Texas, Republican partisan gerrymandering is racial gerrymandering. The proposed redistricting effort comes amid ongoing legal challenges by civil rights groups to Texas’s illegal gerrymander in the 2021 congressional and legislative maps. Trump’s new maps have remained hidden from the public.

The “Fight the Trump Takeover” rally brought together a broad coalition of progressive organizations, elected officials, and grassroots leaders committed to protecting fair representation for all Texans. Held just hours before the third and final mid-decade redistricting hearing, attendees protested efforts to redraw congressional maps in ways that silence voters and entrench political power.

The Fight the Trump Takeover Arlington rally is co-hosted by: Texas For All, Texas AFL-CIO, Texas Organizing Project, MOVE Texas, Planned Parenthood Texas Votes, Texas Freedom Network, Asian Texans for Justice Action Fund, Barbara Jordan Leadership Institute, Black Voters Matter Fund, Common Cause Texas, Communication Workers of America (CWA) District 6, Dallas AFL-CIO, Equality Texas, Greater Fort Worth Sierra Club, Jolt Action, League of Women Voters Tarrant County, League of Women Voters Texas, Progress Texas, Service Employees International Union (SEIU), Sunrise Tarrant, Tarrant County Central Labor Council, Workers Defense Action Fund, and Young Active Labor Leaders (YALL).
