Hundreds Rally Against Abbott & Trump's Redistricting Scheme in Houston

HOUSTON, Texas –  Today, congressional, state, and labor leaders joined hundreds of community members for a rally ahead of the region’s only public hearing on Republicans’ mid-decade redistricting scheme. Instead of addressing the real crises Texans are facing, Governor Greg Abbott is doing Donald Trump’s bidding to rig the 2026 elections and manufacture consent for his deeply unpopular agenda.

In Texas, Republican partisan gerrymandering is racial gerrymandering. The proposed redistricting effort comes amid ongoing legal challenges by civil rights groups to Texas’s illegal gerrymander in the 2021 congressional and legislative maps. Trump’s new maps have remained hidden from the public.

“No matter our trade or political ideology, union members are united in believing in democracy and fairness for everyone,” said Hany Khalil, Executive Director of the Texas Gulf Coast Area Labor Federation.“The fact is, if the state legislature bows to Trump and takes away fair voting maps, they take away our ability to choose who represents us… and when they do that…they take away our ability to fight for better wages and to fight for better healthcare, and for good schools for everyone.”
