Lone Star Labor: Fight the Trump Takeover

Last week, we discussed the not-so-special session currently being used by Greg Abbott to redraw Congressional districts — instead of focusing on emergency preparedness or helping Central Texans recover from the July 4 flooding.

Through redistricting, Abbott is trying to dilute the voting power of Black and brown Texans in certain areas to rig future elections for Republicans. This is disenfranchisement. And he’s only doing it because Donald Trump told him to.

Here’s how you can fight back:

The Texas House is holding three hearings  — in Austin (today), Houston, and Arlington — and we need as many folks as possible to show up in opposition to redistricting. This is an all-hands-on-deck situation! We just rallied in Austin — can you join us for a rally with labor leaders and elected officials in Houston or Arlington, then head over to the hearing room where you can make your voice heard through testimony?

📜 THIS WEEK IN LABOR HISTORY…

Exactly two years ago, U.S. Rep. Greg Casar held a nearly nine-hour thirst strike to draw attention to the fact that every worker should have the right to a water break. Casar was joined by family members of people who had died while working in Texas heat. Read reporting from that day.

We must continue to fight for the safety of Texas workers. Earlier this month, we shared reporting on a Dallas USPS worker who collapsed and died while working in the heat. OSHA recently held informal public hearings on a revised heat rule that could literally save workers’ lives. Large corporations want a weakened rule that protects their profits. No worker should have to risk their lives in the Texas heat so billionaires can make a few extra pennies.

We need every single member of Congress who says they support America’s unions to sign the discharge petition now. Call your Member HERE.
