TEXAS – Today, the Texas AFL-CIO releases the following statement on the passage of Proposition 50 in California. With 74% of votes counted, Prop 50 passed with 63.9% of the vote. California labor unions banded together to call, text, and talk to hundreds of thousands of voters across the state.

“We owe a debt of gratitude to California union members, who put it all on the line to defend democracy and fight for working people by passing Prop 50,” said Rick Levy, president of the Texas AFL-CIO. “The fight that started in Texas didn’t end here, and that’s thanks to the Texas lawmakers who broke quorum and sparked a national fight against the Trump takeover.

“By passing Prop 50, we showed Donald Trump and Greg Abbott that the Labor Movement across this country won’t stand for their corruption or schemes. To Texas workers: Know that the way things are is not the way things have to be. I urge every Texan to keep speaking up, choose workers over billionaires, and fight back alongside us.”

For the past two months, organized labor in California mobilized en masse for the YES ON PROP 50 campaign, as part of an effort to fight back against the Trump Administration’s attack on working people.

The California Federation of Labor Unions and its 1,300 unions were a driving force behind the YES ON PROP 50 campaign. Led by Federation President Lorena Gonzalez, unions poured millions of dollars into the campaign to fund TV, digital ads, and direct voter outreach. The Federation mobilized tens of thousands of union members — including Texans — who contacted millions of California voters about the importance of voting yes and getting their ballot in as early as possible.

"Donald Trump has torn up our collective bargaining agreements, defunded healthcare, eliminated infrastructure jobs, disappeared immigrant workers, and come after everything the Labor Movement stands for. Working people in California are determined to put a check on this reckless Administration,” said Lorena Gonzalez, President of the California Federation of Labor Unions, AFL-CIO. “And, we know, this is just the beginning. Today, the fight begins for the 2026 midterm elections and the California Labor Movement will be ready to mobilize and win, again.”
