Unions Congratulate Christian Menefee on TX-18 Runoff Victory

HOUSTON, Texas — Tonight, Christian Menefee won the special election runoff to finish the unexpired term of the late Congressman and former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner in Texas’s 18th Congressional District. Texas Gulf Coast Area Labor Federation, AFL-CIO, and its political arm, the Committee on Political Education (COPE), endorsed Menefee for the special election in July 2025.

“Now more than ever, we need leaders who will fight to protect us, because Donald Trump and his billionaire followers surely won’t. Christian Menefee has been an advocate for working families throughout his career,” said Hany Khalil, Executive Director of the Texas Gulf Coast Area Labor Federation. “As Harris County Attorney, he’s fought for good-paying union jobs, safer workplaces, and the right to organize. We know he’ll take that same commitment to Washington, and we were proud to endorse him in the special election.”

Texas Gulf Coast Area Labor Federation, AFL-CIO, and the Texas AFL-CIO COPE voted to take no action in the upcoming March primary in Congressional District 18.
